Next time you visit Rockaway Beach, remember to pack a wedge and a putter. Just steps from the ocean (& the Rockaway Bazaar), follow the dune-lined path off the boardwalk, and you'll find the Jacob Riiss Par-3.
The hidden gem has graced the community since 1938. Poor turf and strong wind - conditions are ripe for match play. Play in your bathing suit with a backpack cooler and a few clubs. Enjoy the oddity that is New York City golf.
If you're coming from Manhattan or Brooklyn and don't have a car, take the NYC Ferry (they serve drinks onboard). A shuttle will drop you off right near the course.
You can't go wrong with any of the food vendors at the Riis Park Beach Bazaar (closest to the course). We grabbed a pre-round Pina Colada at Connolly's Bar and then hit Rippers for some boardwalk burgers and the best cheese fries known to us.
