Peddie Golf Course, a part of The Peddie School campus, is steeped in history.
The grounds for the course were originally a 44-acre farm owned by the Black Family. In 1876, Joseph Black started Village Nurseries, a business that has been owned and operated by his family to the present day. The nursery still exists today, resting further back on the property, making room for Peddie Golf Course.
The original 9-hole course (1920) was worked around the trees in the orchards - not the usual way to layout a golf course. When the depression hit, the Black family sold the golf course to the Peddie School for $1 in exchange for rights for his family to play the course for the rest of their lives.
The course was expanded to 18 holes in the early 1950s. Uniquely, the course was expanded hole by hole when time and money were available to do so.
Because the course is built through an old orchard and nursery, golfers can observe several unique species of trees. The 10th hole was the site of NJ’s first Christmas tree farm.
Today, the club is private, with a few tee times available each week on Golf Now. Its tight fairways are laden with trees placing a premium on accuracy off the tee. The course is on the shorter side, making it a relatively easy, enjoyable walk.
Look no further than Hightstown Diner, about a mile down the road from Peddie, for a pre or post-round meal. The old-school dinner serves up a Corned Beef Hash worth traveling for.
