Mattawang means to “travel a difficult path” in the language of the Native Americans who originally lived there. Set in the rolling farm country of Belle Mead, midway between Princeton and Somerville, Mattawang opens with two short, straightforward par-4 handshake holes. But from there, things get tough. Mattawang is one of the best deals in New Jersey golf. Never more than $70, including a cart on the weekends, its’ $15 fee for a weekday twilight round makes Mattawang one of the best value rounds in New Jersey.
The course record holder is Jack Nicklaus, who shot a 66 at the club’s grand opening event in 1962.
