Weaving through wildfire smoke and Philadelphia traffic, we rolled into LuLu hot. The golf club's laidback atmosphere was a welcome change of pace following the interstate drive. LuLu's charm, friendly as it may be, only provided a false sense of security for us that day. With the club's championship only a few days away, LuLu played like a gnarling dog. 3-putts all-around, Donald Ross's greens reigned victorious.
Scoring aside, LuLu is just plain fun. Built in 1912, the golf course retains its original Donald Ross design. Its' green complexes, as well as the diversity of hole types, make LuLu an ideal everyday track. The Philly-area classic beams with character. It may not attract the same headlines as some of its neighbors like Aronimink or Merion, but I sense LuLu doesn't mind playing the role of "hidden gem."
Challenging as it is captivating, you'll use every club in your bag. Ross's first PA course, many of his trademark design characteristics are on display. Hummocks replace trees, while cross-bunkers challenge golfers to shape their shots strategically.
No day at LuLu is complete without a hang in its sports bar-style clubhouse. The gorgeous modern clubhouse was built after the original one burned down in 2015. The refuge features a double-sided indoor + outdoor bar overlooking multiple golf holes and includes almost everything you'd need to outfit a "man cave."
