The New Orleans Firefighters Pension Fund purchased Lakewood Golf Club in 2003, saving it from going out of business. As a tribute to New Orleans Firefighters, the final hole was redesigned and renamed "Fire in the Hole." Guarding the front of the green is a bunker carved in the shape of a flame. Keep an eye out for several other firefighter themes throughout the course.
The club has a rich history, hosting numerous PGA Tour events and U.S. Open qualifiers. A long course and one with the bones of a once beautiful layout, Lakewood's conditioning needs to be improved if it ever wants to reclaim its status as a tournament site. As it stands today, Lakewood is an affordable option amongst New Orleans' other municipal courses (2022).
With no shortage of great food options in New Orleans, grab something off the beaten path (& near the course) while you're on the West Bank. It'll be hard to beat Sultan's Shawarma Shack… doing business out of an old Rally's.
