There are some places that you will most likely never know about unless you happen to work in the area. El Sabroso, a tiny lunch counter serving Latin American food in the garment district in Midtown Manhattan, is hidden from the street by two sets of industrial doors – nestled inside the freight-loading entrance of a nondescript skyscraper. Part of its mystique is being able to find it.
Amongst fabric wholesalers and chain restaurants, the 5-seat lunch counter serves up classic Latin American slow-cooked meat dishes with rice and beans, topped off with a smoky, orange hot sauce. Tony, the owner, will greet you as if you’ve known each other your whole lives before rattling off the day’s menu and filling up your styrofoam container.
