Sat next to the fireplace for a pre-round lunch; it's easy to figure out what makes this national membership club so appealing. Chechessee Creek Club is pure golf. This is Lowcountry golf at its finest; the course weaves through marshland and live oaks. If you're lucky, you'll meet the course's resident bald eagle, Crenshaw.
The Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw-designed golf course is as enjoyable a walk as they come. Short walks from green-tee, tidy three-hour rounds are the norm. It is truly an everyday course, presenting tricky green complexes that will have you scratching your head, putting from 20 yards away to combat the tightest of lies. Creativity and an expert's touch are required to master these firm and fast greens, the best we've played in the Lowcountry.
There is a remarkably relaxed pace felt around the club. There is no rush, no crowd, no stress. It's golf as it should be. The hospitality follows suit, from dining room staff to caddies; Chechessee's staff genuinely care about providing guests the absolute best possible experience.
The Lowcountry cottage-style clubhouse is a pre-and post-round oasis. The wrap-around outdoor porch overlooking the 18th hole and practice area is where you want to relax following a round. Park yourself in a rocking chair near one of the fire pits, Creek Tea in hand - undoubtedly one of the best hangs in golf.
Take your time. Enjoy a drink or a meal in the comfy dining room or outside on the porch after your round. Everything we ate was fantastic, including the homemade cookies (right out of the oven) served for dessert. The attention to detail is what truly makes Chechessee Creek stand out amongst its neighbors.
There are rumors that a lit short course may be in the works 👀
